Airstrike Kills Seven Soldiers at Habbaniyah Base Hospital in Iraq

(MENAFN) Seven Iraqi soldiers were killed and 13 more wounded Wednesday after an airstrike struck a military medical clinic and an engineering unit at the Habbaniyah base, located west of Baghdad, the Iraqi Defense Ministry announced.

The ministry, posting on X, said the initial strike was followed by continued fire from an aircraft as rescue teams scoured the scene for survivors.

The victims were performing their "national and humanitarian duties" at the time of the attack, the ministry stated, condemning the assault as a "blatant and serious violation of international laws and norms that prohibit targeting medical facilities and their staff."

Officials labeled the incident "a dangerous escalation," further declaring that striking medical infrastructure constitutes "a grave crime" under international law.

Despite the assault, the ministry vowed its forces would not stand down, warning that Iraq reserves the right to pursue all available options "to respond in accordance with applicable laws." No party was formally named as responsible.

The attack unfolds against a dramatically escalating regional backdrop. The United States and Israel have conducted sustained airstrikes against Iran since February 28, leaving over 1,340 people dead — among them former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran has since launched retaliatory drone and missile campaigns targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting American military personnel, inflicting casualties, damaging critical infrastructure, and sending shockwaves through global aviation and financial markets.
